Nonimmigrants who enter the U.S. for a temporary period of time are restricted to activities consistent with their nonimmigrant visa. You must represent that your stay in the U.S. is temporary:

Are you an Athlete (amateur or professional) competing for prize money? You may qualify for the B-1 visa.
Are you coming for a temporary business visit? You may qualify for the B-1 visa.
Are you looking to be a nanny or a domestic worker for a US family? You may qualify for the B-1 visa.
Are you a Diplomat or Foreign Government Official? You may qualify for the A visa.
Are you looking into the exchange visitor program? You may qualify for the J visa.
Are you an Australian in a Specialty Profession? You may qualify for the E-3 visa.
Are you a crewmember? You may qualify for the D visa.

Verify if your country of residence is part of the Visa Waiver Program.
